Frame-off restored to original, this late 1949 Chevrolet 3100 retains its utilitarian good looks and features added upgrades for better drivability. Black fenders and running boards complement a green body to visually widen the appearance of the entire vehicle and disguise that extra wide cab GM designed into these trucks. Up front, the expertly restored grille combines with small flashes of new chrome like the driver side mirror, the door handles and the passenger side lock cover to highlight the smooth green and black canvas. Out back, dark new bed wood and new stainless skid strips look natural against the green body and are decidedly one of the trucks best features. Beautiful large domed center caps with matching trim rings are mounted to body color wheels that wear 235/75/15 Kuhmo Venture radials. Bright red Chevrolet lettering, painted on those domed center caps, combines with new hood emblems and new bumpers to give the truck a finished look.
This 1949 Chevrolet is equipped with its original Thriftmaster 235 cubic inch inline six that has been balanced, blueprinted and fully rebuilt. Performance upgrades include a Wayne finned and polished valve cover with matching side plates, a Fenton dual intake, Fenton polished headers and a Pertronix Flame Thrower performance coil. Under hood detailing is extensive and begins with a fresh coat of satin black paint on the motor and inner fenders. The alternator and everything in front of the motor is painted the same satin black as the motor itself, while the familiar green that covers the body of the truck extends down the firewall behind the motor. Two gold Rochester single barrel carburetors, fed by new metal fuel lines with brass fittings, match the gold topped radiator. A red distributor cap provides the same pop for the engine bay that the red Chevrolet center cap lettering provides for the exterior. And gloss black air and oil filter housings feature correct AC decals for a simplistic but appealing touch.
Crawling underneath reveals a powder coated frame with stainless bolts and clean sheet metal coated in chassis black. At the rear, the truck retains its original solid axle, leaf springs and drum brakes. Up front, the solid axle and leaf springs benefit from the addition of disc brakes. Mounted under the floorboards, an upgraded master cylinder pushes fluid to all four corners to bring everything to a halt. The upgraded 4-speed transmission gives the driver a much appreciated extra gear and sends power to an upgraded rear end via the original closed driveshaft. A stainless exhaust system with a dual inlet and outlet muffler bolts to the Fenton headers and runs the whole length of the truck.
Inside, the fully restored interior takes you right back to the 40s. The vibrant green from the body is present on the dash and doors while an attention grabbing yellow steering wheel spinner knob looks right at home on the factory gray steering wheel. A new deluxe vinyl bench seat combines with a custom one piece headliner and custom door panels to add a bit of luxury to an otherwise utilitarian design. The original column mounted shifter has been replaced with a floor mounted unit. And the overall theme of green, black and chrome is continued by new carpet and new stainless on the dash. Well done and appearing factory correct this interior manages to hide some modern conveniences. The original radio in the dash looks the part, but an upgraded electrical system allowed this truck to be equipped with a full stereo system complete with an MP3 jack that is hidden under the seat. Hidden behind the dash, an aftermarket air conditioning system keeps the cab and its occupants cool.
Despite looking surprisingly simple, this ’49 Chevy has historical significance and rugged elegance that sets it apart from most restored and modified trucks. It’s a highly drivable truck that feels like vintage hardware and will be welcome at any classic car event you attend. Call today!
